Telangana reaches new power milestone, crossing 16,000 MW peak load, aiming for 17,000 MW next month.
Telangana has achieved another milestone in handling the peak load of power on the transmission system on Wednesday (February 19, 2025) morning as it has crossed the 16,000 megawatt (MW) barrier for the first time by recording about 16,100 MW load at 7.55 a.m.
In the process, it has become the third State in the South after Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to post peak load beyond 16,000 MW. The two States post peak loads beyond 17,000 MW constantly during the peak agricultural operations, Tamil Nadu recorded its highest-ever load of 20,830 MW on May 2 last year. Similarly, Karnataka recorded its highest-ever peak load of 17,691 MW on January 31 this year.
“Though it’s a long way to go to post such loads in Telangana, we estimate it to cross the 17,000 MW barrier next month, when the demand from agriculture sector is expected to peak”, a senior official of the TG-Transco said.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister M. Bhatti Vikramarka, who handles the portfolio of Energy too, said the power utilities are prepared to meet peak loads even beyond 17,000 MW. The highest peak load recorded last year (2023-24) was on March 8, when it was recorded at 15,623 MW. Telangana crossed this mark on February 5 this year when peak load of 15,644 MW was recorded.
