Two suspects in Tangra murders to be discharged from Kolkata hospital, police to take custody for questioning.
Two survivors who are also suspects of the Tangra murders are likely to be discharged from a Kolkata hospital on Saturday, February 22, 2025. The police are likely to take custody of the Dey brothers, who are suspects in the murders of three persons, including two women and one young girl of their own family.
Pranay Dey (44) and his 14-year-old son are likely to be released as they are said to have nearly recovered from their injuries after the car crash which was suspected to be a mass suicide attempt. The other brother Prasun will remain in the Ruby General Hospital where all three were being treated. Doctors have said that his condition is not stable enough for release.
According to the police they will conduct medical examinations at a government hospital on the two male members after they are released from the hospital. Once the medical examination clears them and assures they are out of danger, the police may begin their questioning.
Police had previously recorded their initial statements. But the motive behind the murder of the three women (Sudeshna, 39, and Romi, 44, and a teenage girl) in their family has not been completely clarified which has given rise to a series of questions including facts like who killed the women and if all three men were involved in the act.
The suspects may also be taken back to the scene of the crime at their Tangra residence to recreate the crime scene to help in detailed investigation of the murders.
The police have started an investigation based on a murder case was registered at the Tangra police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against unidentified individuals based on a complaint filed by Swapan Kumar Banerjee, the father of Romi.
“It appears that on the night of February 17, all members of the family attempted to kill themselves. But that attempt was possibly unsuccessful,” a senior police officer said during initial investigation. But this was a claim made by the men which was proved wrong as the post-mortem reports revealed that the women were murdered.
