Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to upgrade ticket vending machines for seamless digital payment experience in Phase I & II.
After problems with the existing ticket vending machines, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) plans to upgrade them soon, both in the Phase I Network and the upcoming Phase II Project.
For many years now, Metro Rail riders have been facing difficulty in using the ticket vending machines at many of the stations since they are either defunct or only offer smart card top-up services. CMRL will start removing them from the Phase I stations in April.
According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the machines installed in the Phase I Network suffered from constant payment problems. “We analysed the problems with the current ticket vending machines. The ones to be installed at Phase II stations will be upgraded and designed in such a way that people can use them effortlessly,” an official said.
“Only digital modes of payment will be accepted. Be it recharge of cards or ticket generation, it can be carried out with ease,” he said. Once the installation of the new machines begins in the Phase II stations, they will also be gradually installed at the stations in the Phase I Network as well, he added.
Officials said though several modes of ticketing options, including WhatsApp, QR Code, PayTM, and PhonePe, were available, quite a few people come to purchase tickets at the counter.
“Nearly 25% of Metro Rail users buy tickets from the counter. Hence, we decided to installed the upgraded ticket vending machines in the Phase II Project. This way, not everyone needs to head to the counter, and many can quickly use the vending machines to get their tickets and travel,” he added.
