Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin firmly opposes National Education Policy, citing harm to students and state interests.
Ruling out the possibility of implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) at any cost, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said on Saturday that his government was against the policy as it was detrimental to the interest of students and for the State at large.
Addressing the seventh zonal conference of the State Parent Teacher Association at Veppur in Cuddalore district, he said his government would not implement the new legislation even if the Union government was going to stall fund allocation.
“You have stopped funds to the tune of around ₹2,000 crore for not implementing the NEP. If we decide to introduce the policy, we will take the State backward by 2,000 years. So, even if the State is offered ₹10,000 crore, the government will not introduce the NEP so long as I am the Chief Minister,” Mr. Stalin said, addressing the parents and teachers from seven districts at the event.
Stating that his government was not against any language, including Hindi, the Chief Minister said the government was only against the imposition of Hindi over Tamil. Those keen on learning Hindi are free to join Kendriya Vidyalaya Schools and classes conducted by the Hindi Prachara Sabha, he said.
“We are against the NEP not because of the factor of imposing Hindi alone, the policy, if introduced, will keep students away from schools because of its structure, including the assessment for Class 3, 5, and 8. Students will not turn up to schools. The policy is also against the concept of social justice and equity and the interest of the socially marginalised, including Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes,” Mr. Stalin said.
The State followed the two-language policy and was able to provide quality education, which was acknowledged by the Central government itself. Even without any support from Centre, the Tamil Nadu government was committed to catering to the needs of the Tamil Nadu’s education sector, which was far ahead of those of the other States, he asserted.
