Tamil Nadu Law Minister praises state's safety for women, challenges other states to match its standards.
Tamil Nadu is a safe place for women, said Law Minister S. Regupathy on Monday and asked Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president Vijay to comment on the issue after comparing the situation in other States.
Commenting on the statement by Mr. Vijay expressing concern over women’s safety in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Regupathy said that only under the present government, there was real safety for women in Tamil Nadu.
“Women are stepping out freely just as Mahatma Gandhi had envisioned. For Gandhiji, true freedom meant women walking safely at night, wearing ornaments without fear. Across India, only in Tamil Nadu is this vision being realised. Let that party leader visit other States and see if women can go out after 10 p.m. Let him see the actual situation in States such as Bihar and Odisha,” Mr. Regupathy said in a brief interaction with reporters in Pudukottai.
On the protests staged by the AIADMK over the Anna University sexual assault case, the Mr. Regupathy said the government had taken appropriate action in the case and there was no need to shield anyone. The AIADMK was engaging in theatrics only to make their presence felt. The Pollachi sexual assault case alone was enough to highlight the nature of their governance, he maintained.
