Officials found raw sewage being released into Periya Eri canal from an apartment complex
The Tambaram City Corporation has issued a notice to an apartment located on Pallavaram Thoraipakkam Radial Road for letting raw sewage into the canal linked to the Periya Eri.
Tambaram Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan, who confirmed that the civic body had received complaints about raw sewage being let into the canal, said officials inspected the apartment and found the (STP) to be in working condition. The apartment owners have been asked to run the STP on all days and let out only treated wastewater.
Social activist V. Santhanam had flagged the issue to officials concerned, including Chief Secretary V. Irai Anbu. Mr. Santhanam, along with the residents in the locality, visited the apartment after he received information about raw sewage being let into the Periya Eri canal.
Mr. Santhanam said the State government had renovated the Pallavaram Periya Eri and Keellkattalai Eri at a cost of more than ₹12 crore. Releasing untreated sewage despite the availability of a functional STP was heartbreaking. He said the radial road had become a prominent destination for several commercial buildings and residential apartments. The Tambaram Corporation should take steps to inspect the STPs regularly so that raw sewage was not let into the waterbodies.
