Last year, Mr. Stalin had announced in the Assembly that a world-class library and intellectual centre would be established in the name of Kalaignar, former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
Mr. Stalin laid the foundation stone for the Centre from the Secretariat in Chennai via video conferencing, a release said.
The seven-floor facility will come up in an area of 1,97,337 square feet. A sum of ₹235 crore has been allocated towards the construction of the library, while ₹50 crore has been allocated for books and e-books, and ₹5 crore for equipment, it added.
Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru, Minister for Public Works, Highways and Minor Ports E.V. Velu, and School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, among others, were present.
Separately, Mr. Stalin at the Secretariat handed over a cheque of ₹110 crore to P. Jameela, Chief Financial Officer, Tamil Nadu Power Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, towards increasing the corpus to enable temples to perform one-time pooja from the accrued interest under the ‘Oru Kaala Pooja’ scheme.
During the demand for grants for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department for 2024-25, it was announced that the corpus amount would be increased from ₹2 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh for nearly 17,000 temples under the ‘Oru Kaala Pooja’ scheme, and that it would be extended to 1,000 more temples. Mr. Stalin presented the cheque for implementing the announcement, according to a release.
