
Man gets eight years in jail for attempted sexual assault on woman with disabilities

The Principal District and Sessions Judge in Erode on Friday (March 28, 2025) sentenced a lorry driver to eight years and six months in prison for attempting to sexually assault a woman with disabilities in 2020. The woman was also physically assaulted by the accused, causing injuries.
According to the prosecution, the 37-year-old woman was hearing and speech impaired and was married, but had separated from her husband and was living with her parents. On August 2, 2020, when she was grazing goats in a public place, Dhanapal, 42, of Umareddiyur in Anthiyur block, attacked her, attempted to sexually assault her, and threatened her. She, however, managed to escape and informed her parents, who then lodged a complaint with the All Women Police Station in Bhavani. A case was registered, and Dhanapal was arrested.
Judge B. Murugesan found him guilty and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment for attempting to sexually assault the woman, three years for physically attacking her, and six months for causing injuries to her. The judge also imposed a fine of ₹2,500 on him.
Later, he was lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison. V. Poongothai, Special Public Prosecutor for SC/ST Act cases, appeared for the survivor.
