Protests over flyover near sacred site during Sarhul festival in Jharkhand; Chief Minister faces backlash from tribal outfits.
Amid protests over the construction of a flyover near Sarna Sthal (a sacred site of tribals), Sarhul, the biggest festival of the tribals, was celebrated in Jharkhand on Tuesday (April 1, 2025).
Chief Minister Hemant Soren visited several places, including Siramtoli where the flyover was being constructed. Several tribal outfits protesting against the flyover reached the site and shouted slogans against Mr. Soren and his government.
“We have been celebrating Sarhul festival as per tradition for years. Our ancestors have kept the traditions of this natural festival intact and strong. We have to take this inherited tradition further,” Mr. Soren said while addressing the people at Siramtoli.
He added that people should take a pledge to preserve nature and move forward with the traditions of the tribal State.
The protesters, wearing black ribbons, also showed black flags to Mr. Soren and his wife, Kalpana Soren, who had accompanied him to the worship programme organised at Sarna Sthal.
Over the past several months, many tribal outfits have been protesting against the construction of the flyover. They specifically demanded the removal of a ramp, which they claimed would obstruct access to their religious site. The frequent traffic movement on the flyover could disturb the sanctity of the site, they added.
On March 22, over 40 tribal outfits had given a call for a Ranchi bandh, which had received great support.
