Telangana Legislature's stormy budget session 2025-26 to begin with Governor's address, Opposition leader's expected attendance, and focus on BC reservations.
The stage is all set for the commencement of the stormy budget session of the Telangana Legislature from Wednesday (March 12, 2025).
The session will start with the traditional address of Governor Jishnu Dev Varma to the joint sitting of the Legislature after which the session would be adjourned for the day. The address will be followed by the meeting of the Legislature’s Business Advisory Committee (BAC) to finalise the session’s duration and essential items that should be taken up during the sitting.
The session this time will be interesting as the Opposition leader K. Chandrasekhar Rao is expected to attend it if the claims of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president and MLA K.T. Rama Rao are any indication.
Accordingly, Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao held a detailed meeting of the legislature party on Tuesday (March 11, 2025) briefing the party’s legislators about the stand that should be adopted on issues of immediate importance.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy remained firm claiming that the main Opposition leader was abstaining from the proceedings of the assembly as he had no locus standi to raise the issues after pushing the State into a financial crisis. The BJP on its part is gearing up to corner the Treasury Benches raising several issues during the session, particularly the allegedly unkept and half kept promises of the Congress.
According to the tentative schedule, the two houses will debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address on Thursday and the Government is likely to introduce a Bill paving the way for the enhancement of reservations to Backward Classes (BC) in education and employment to 42%. The Legislature is likely to adopt a resolution requesting the Central Government to allow the enhanced reservation for the BCs in proportion to their population as was revealed by the extensive caste census conducted by the State Government for over two months covering all but 3.1% population.
The enactment of the legislation will be followed by the introduction of the State’s annual financial statement, and budget for the year 2025-26 likely on March 19. The total outlay for the next fiscal will be known only after the budget is introduced in the legislature, but officials are hopeful that it is expected to be around Rs. 3 lakh crore, around five to six% higher than the current year’s Rs. 2.9 lakh crore.

The Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) whether it would fulfil the poll promise of providing free LPG cylinders to women on Holi. Hitting back, the ruling party asked AAP why had it not kept its word on disbursing ₹1,000 to women for which it had allocated ₹2,000 crore in the 2024-25 budget. Meanwhile, Delhi government sources said officials are preparing a blueprint of the proposal and that the criteria for the beneficiaries is yet to be decided. The BJP had promised to provide LPG cylinders for ₹500 to women from poor families and one free cylinder each on Holi and Deepavali ahead of the February 5 Assembly election.
