Palakkad Bishop to lay foundation for St. Raphael’s Cathedral with former bishops and guests attending historic ceremony.
Palakkad Bishop Mar Peter Kochupurakkal will lay the foundation for St. Raphael’s Cathedral here on Friday afternoon. Former bishop Mar Jacob Manathodath will unveil the model of the new cathedral. Sultanpet Bishop Mar Antonysamy Peter Abir will be the guest. Former bishops, priests and nuns from the Palakkad diocese will attend the function. The organisers said that the foundation stone laying ceremony would be a historic occasion for Palakkad.
Prayers have been held in Palakkad since 1935. It was in 1955 that a church was constructed at Chakkamthara. St. Raphael’s Cathedral was reconstructed several times since then.
The new cathedral will have facility to house 1,500 people at a time. Fr. Joshi Pulikkottil said that the cathedral would be completed in three years.
