Special court for SC/ST cases inaugurated in Nagercoil

Justice K.R. Shriram inaugurates new court building for SC/ST, emphasizing equity, fairness, and social justice for marginalized communities.
Justice K.R. Shriram, Chief Justice of Madras High Court, on Saturday said that the new court building for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes embodies the spirit of justice offering profound inspiration and steadfast support to the marginalised people of the district.
He made this statement at the inaugural event of the special court in the cadre of district judges for trial of cases under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. 1989 on the district court campus in Nagercoil.
At the event Justice Shriram noted that the SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act enacted in September 9, 1989 had been a beacon of hope for the underprivileged communities.
He emphasised that this legislation stands as a testament to society’s collective commitment to upholding the principles of equity, fairness and human welfare.
He highlighted the need for progress in promoting social justice and safeguarding the rights of members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
He referred to the 111th couplet from Tirukkural, “Thakudhi enavondru nandre pakuthiyaar,” and explained that acting with fairness and equal regard for all divisions is a preeminent virtue and stated that the “kural” serves as the elementary principle, guiding factor for the judiciary to deliver impartial justice to all regardless of the status.
Addressing the gathering, Minister of Law, Courts and Prisons S. Regupathy emphasised that it is the duty of the government and High Court to provide adequate court facilities as per the needs of the people.

New ration cards will be issued in Andhra Pradesh from March, says Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar. An opportunity will be provided to the existing ration card-holders to make changes, the Minister says. The government has procured 33 lakh tonnes of paddy from 5.87 lakh farmers during kharif and deposited ₹7,480 crore into their accounts in 24 hours, he says.
