A solid waste treatment plant established at the Tiruchi International Airport was commissioned on Thursday.
Tiruchi Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan inaugurated the facility. Airport Director G. Gopalakrishnan was present.
Established at a cost of ₹1.49 crore, the new plant is located on the city side of the new integrated terminal building. The integrated solid waste management facility developed on a build, operate, and maintain basis is set to enhance waste handling efficiency at the airport through a structured and eco-friendly approach. The processing capacity of the plant is one tonne a day for wet or organic waste.
Waste would be collected and transported from the designated points at the airport to the compost plant. Segregation of recyclable and non-recyclable waste would be done and mechanised treatment of organic waste would be carried out. Inorganic waste would be disposed of to the authorised agencies outside the airport.
The facility complies with Municipal Solid Waste (Handling and Management) Rules, 2016, the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation guidelines, and the pollution control norms stipulated by the State and the Central Pollution Control Boards. The commissioning of the facility reaffirms Tiruchi international airport’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility ensuring a cleaner and greener future, a press release said.
