Infosys faces scrutiny in Karnataka Legislature over slow development of Hubballi campus, sparking discussions on job creation.
Bengaluru-based IT behemoth Infosys Ltd., which has been in the news over layoffs on its Mysuru campus, found itself as point of discussion in the ongoing Legislature session over the slow-paced development of its Hubballi campus.
“Infosys has taken land from the government and has not done much to create employment in Hubballi. This issue was previously discussed in the legislature. What is the status now?” BJP member S.V. Sankanur asked Industries Minister M.B. Patil in the Legislative Council on Tuesday (March 4, 2025).
The issue had come before both Houses of legislature in 2024, too, when members took exception to the company taking 43 acres at a concessional rate but not doing much for job creation in the city. While members had accused the company of partially developing the land, Mr. Patil had in Legislative Council assured that the excess land would be reclaimed by the government.
While a few other members joined the chorus, the Minister tried to pacify them by saying that he had already held discussions with the company. The members then asked about the outcome to which the Minister said he would hold another round of meeting with the company.
Intervening in the discussion, Chairman Basavaraj Horatti, who is also from Hubballi, said that the company was holding the land, but had not done anything with it. “Just because they are big, do not hesitate to take action,” he told the Minister, who assured he would hold another round of discussion with the company at the earliest.
