Shops in Telangana allowed to function 24-hour operation during Ramzan with conditions on wages, holidays, and work hours.
Shops and other business establishments in Telangana have been granted a 30-day exemption to stay functioning for 24 hours during the Islamic month of Ramzan between March 2 and March 31, 2025. A Government Order issued by the Commissioner of Labour Sanjay Kumar has a caveat of adhering to certain conditions for employers.
The decision to allow shops to remain open for 24 hours during Ramzan has been a long-standing tradition in Hyderabad and the surrounding areas . It aims to facilitate businesses and accommodate the needs of citizens during the festive period. This year, the decision was set in motion by the Commissioner of Minorities Welfare, Telangana, who sent an email followed by a meeting with the Minister for Transport and Backward Classes (BC) Welfare, Ponnam Prabhakar, in connection with Ramzan Festival.
However, the exemption comes with specific conditions: employees working beyond standard hours must be paid overtime wages at twice the regular rate, compensatory holidays must be provided for work on holidays, and the maximum work hours must not exceed 13 hours per day. Additionally, women employees would be permitted to work night shifts under specific terms outlined in a previous Government Order number 36.
