Woman arrested for obtaining death certificate for alive husband to sell his land, leading to legal consequences.
A 40-year-old woman who obtained death certificate for her husband who is alive, was arrested while she tried to get a legal heir certificate in Salem district on Monday (February 3, 2025).
S. Vijayakumar (48), is a resident of Edappadi Housing Board. His wife is Revathi (40), and the couple has two daughters aged 17 and 15. Vijayakumar who worked in Malaysia, returned to his village last year.
Frequent quarrels arose between the couple and following this, Vijayakumar left her and went to Hosur in Krishnagiri district for work in October last year. On October 24, 2024, Revathi lodged a complaint with Edappadi police stating that her husband went missing. Receiving the complaint, the police registered a case.
Police sources said that on November 2, 2024, she went to Bhavani police station in Erode district and claimed that an unidentified body (found in the River Cauvery) that was buried by the police was her husband, Vijayakumar. As she already lodged a missing person complaint with Edappadi police, the Bhavani police inquired and provided the post-mortem report of the unidentified body to Revathi. Through the post-mortem report, she obtained a death certificate for Vijayakumar. Based on it, she applied for a legal heir certificate online, allegedly to sell the land belonging to Vijayakumar in Erode district.
But while the Edappadi revenue officials inquired, they found that Vijayakumar is alive and summoned him to Edappadi taluk office on Monday. The officials also informed Revathi to come to the office at the same time, claiming to issue the legal heir certificate. Both of them arrived at the taluk office following which the revenue officials informed the Edappadi police. The police registered a case and arrested Revathi and remanded her in prison on Tuesday.
