The 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards offer insight into the unpredictable Oscar race with Kristen Bell hosting.
The 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards are getting underway Sunday in what should offer the final clue in an unusually unpredictable Oscar race. The other major awards — including the BAFTAs, the Producers Guild Awards, the Directors Guild Awards and the Golden Globes — have all had their say. But actors make up the largest piece of the film academy pie, so their picks often correspond strongly with Academy Award winners.
Kristen Bell is hosting the ceremony and is also in contention for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her role in Nobody Wants This.
After wins from the PGA and the DGA — and last night, the Independent Spirit Awards — Sean Baker’s Anora is seen as the favorite to win best picture in a week’s time at the Oscars. But Edward Berger’s Conclave won last weekend at the BAFTAs, the latest wrench in an award season full of them. That’s included the unlikely rise and precipitous fall of another top contender, Emilia Pérez.
Leading this year’s film nominations is Wicked with five nods, trailed by A Complete Unknown with four. Emilia Pérez and Anora each secured three nominations, and all four are in the running for the prestigious Best Cast award. They are joined in that category by Conclave and The Last Showgirl, which both received two nominations.
On the television side, Shōgun tops the nominations with five, while The Bear follows closely with four. The Diplomat earned three nods.
Ahead of the main event, winners in the stunt ensemble categories were announced, with The Fall Guy taking the honor for film and Shōgun winning for television.
In addition to the competitive categories, Jane Fonda will be given the SAG Life Achievement Award.
