Nevertheless, the detective dog belonging to the Labrador breed of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) Dog Squad in Tiruchi displayed its intelligence in the “numeric calculus” demonstration that was held in front of a good audience at the event.
Simple calculations (addition and subtraction) in single digits were written on a board and read aloud by its handler head constable M. Pechinathan and “Rocky” instantly barked that many times signalling the answer.
For instance, when Mr. Pechinathan wrote two plus two on the board and read it aloud, Rocky barked four times, drawing huge applause from the well-attended gathering.
Mr. Pechinathan said training in simple calculations for Rocky to easily understand and convey through barking was started about two years ago. The response became good over a period of time. “We wanted to do something different for Rocky apart from its forte of detecting explosive substances”, he said.
The calculations (addition and subtraction) are confined only in single digit and that too up to a maximum digit of eight so that canine did not get exhausted by barking. This is for the first time that such a demonstration has been held at a Republic Day celebration.
