Parents of murdered doctor meet West Bengal Governor and BJP president to seek justice and criticize CBI investigation.
Parents of the doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year met West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose and State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday (January 30, 2025).
While the BJP leader called on the parents at their residence, in the evening they met the Governor at the Raj Bhawan.

“The Governor said he will make our demands heard before the Home Ministry. We have also urged for a meeting with the President and the Governor said he will try and asked us to send an email,” the father of the victim said. The father, who has been openly being critical of the role of the Central Bureau of Investigation, that has investigated the rape and murder, said he also has complained about the CBI handling of the case.
Earlier in the day, Mr. Majumdar, also a Union Minister, met the grieving parents at their residence on the outskirts of Kolkata. “They have particularly raised concerns about one CBI officer, alleging inadequate efforts in the probe,” the State BJP president said. Mr. Majumdar said the parents were under constant attack from several Trinamool Congress leaders who made derogatory statements as they raised questions against the State administration. “I have assured them to carry on their struggle without fearing anyone,” the BJP leader said.
Since January 20, when Additional District and Session Judge Anirban Das awarded life imprisonment to the convict Sanjay Roy, the family members have been raising questions about the investigation by the CBI. The trial court had said that the rape and murder did not fit in the criteria of rarest of rare case and said, “we must rise above the primitive instinct of a life for a life”.
Along with criticising the CBI, the parents have targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said it was the Kolkata Police who had goofed up investigation at the start. The parents also raised questions on why the State government was keen on awarding the death penalty to the convict.
