AIADMK protests insufficient doctors, medicines at Rameswaram Hospital, demands accountability from Public Health Department officials.
AIADMK cadre headed by former Minister Kadambur C. Raju staged a protest in Rameswaram on Tuesday condemning the issue of insufficient doctors and medicines at Rameswaram Government Hospital.
He alleged that due to very few doctors present during peak hours, patients who come to the hospital with serious ailments and injuries were either being referred to nearby government hospital or to private hospitals. The Public Health Department officials should make the doctors accountable and ensure that they remained in the hospital during duty hours.
Further, shortage of medicines at the hospital which was reported to the higher officials several times, was also not taken seriously, he said and added that in many occasions, the ‘golden hour’ was narrowly missed.
When medicines are indispensable to even treat minor problems, the shortage of medicines was the first thing to be taken care of, Mr. Raju said.
Other civic issues like proper roads, streetlights, good water connection in Rameswaram municipality were also not taken care of, he said and added that the roads were so bad that it discouraged visitors and also damaged the vehicles.
“While thousands of devotees throng Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, the poor infrastructure will only add to their woes,” he said. The government should earmark not only funds but also provide adequate human resources to handle the floating population to the ‘temple’ town.
The DMK government which was keen on increasing all forms of taxes such as water tax, vacant site tax, property tax, among others and also had raised the power tariff and the price of milk and other essential services, should also focus on spending the money on people’s needs, he said.
