New bridge over Vembanad Lake in Kerala to open in April, connecting Perumbalam island to mainland.
The bridge over Vembanad Lake, connecting Perumbalam island in Alappuzha district of Kerala to the mainland, is set to open in April.
Officials said the construction of the bridge had been completed and work on approach roads on Perumbalam and Vaduthala sides was progressing.
According to Daleema Jojo, MLA, the bridge is expected to be opened to traffic in the first week of April. “The construction of the Perumbalam bridge is nearing completion. Once the approach roads on both sides are finished, the inauguration is expected to take place in the first week of April,” Ms. Jojo said.
The MLA demanded that the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) launch bus services to Perumbalam once the bridge is opened. “Considering my demand and as directed by Transport Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar, a team of officials led by KSRTC Ernakulam zonal officer visited Perumbalam recently. It has been decided that short-distance buses operating from the island will stop at New South jetty. Long-distance services will halt near the bridge. Arrangements will also be made for bus crews to stay overnight,” the MLA added.
The construction of the bridge was a long-pending demand of the people of Perumbalam, the only island grama panchayat in Alappuzha. The bridge will make travel hassle-free for around 15,000 islanders who currently use boats to commute between their village and the mainland.
The bowstring arch bridge has a length of 1,157 metres and a width of 11 metres. The bridge, linking Perumbalam and Vaduthala at Arookutty, has 30 spans, including three navigation spans. Of these, 27 are 35 metres long, while the three in the middle are 55 metres each. The carriageway has a width of 7.5 m. Footpaths on both sides are 1.5 metres wide. Once completed approach roads will have a total length of 650 metres.
The ₹100-crore project is funded under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
