Blood donation camp by Vivekananda Memorial Hospital & SVYM includes visually impaired & disabled donors, challenging misconceptions.
As many as 35 individuals, including 24 persons with disabilities, donated blood at a blood donation camp held at Boodugunte Kamakshamma Parvathamma Kalyana Mantapa in Mysuru on Saturday.
Vivekananda Memorial Hospital, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM), Blood Bank, K.R. Hospital, and Drushti Charitable Trust organised the camp through Bharat Petroleum’s CSR initiative.
While most of the blood donors were persons with visual impairment – either completely blind or with low vision – some of them with locomotor disabilities too came forward to donate blood.
“This camp was conducted to clear the misconception that persons with disabilities cannot donate blood,” the organisers said in a press statement.
The statement noted that persons with disabilities like visual, locomotor, speech, and hearing can donate blood, while those with certain blood-related disorders are not advised to donate blood.
The blood donation camp received support from many well-wishers and institutions, demonstrating that differently-abled are not only independent in many ways but can contribute to society in many ways,” it noted.
A health check-up was also organised on the occasion with specialists in ophthalmology, audiology, dentistry, and general medicine offering consultation to persons with visual impairment.
