P.V. Anvar urges UDF to include Trinamool Congress in coalition, proposes V.S. Joy as candidate for Nilambur byelection.
P.V. Anvar, who recently resigned from his Assembly seat after joining the Trinamool Congress led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has urged the United Democratic Front (UDF) to consider inducting the Trinamool Congress into its coalition.
Sources close to Mr. Anvar confirmed that Nilambur’s former MLA has written to UDF chairman and Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan, entreating the front to include the Trinamool Congress in the coalition. Mr. Satheesan, according to sources, has been open to Mr. Anvar’s demand.
The UDF leadership will take a final call on the request after discussions. Both the Congress and the Trinamool Congress are important constituents of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA). However, their relationship is not so smooth in West Bengal. Besides, the CPI(M), with which Mr. Anvar broke away after an acrimonious stand-off in recent months, too is a member of INDIA bloc.
Mr. Anvar recently apologised to the UDF leadership, particularly to Mr. Satheesan, for his harsh attacks on them when he was with the Left Democratic Front (LDF), and extended his unconditional support to the UDF.
The UDF has started discussions on handling the upcoming byelection in Nilambur Assembly seat vacated by Mr. Anvar, who had won it in 2016 and 2021 by defeating Congress’s Aryadan Shoukath and V.V. Prakash respectively.
Soon after stepping down as the MLA, Mr. Anvar had suggested that the UDF consider District Congress Committee president V.S. Joy as its candidate for the byelection, saying that Mr. Joy’s influence in the Christian community living in the hill areas would help the UDF secure a massive victory over the LDF.
Although the UDF spurned the suggestion, discussions are afoot within the UDF, with Congress leaders weighing different prospects. Mr. Anvar said that he was not opposing Congress general secretary Aryadan Shoukath, a potential candidate of Nilambur. “But the political and community dynamics will be more favourable for Mr. Joy,” he said.
