National Voters’ Day celebrated in southern districts with events promoting voting rights and encouraging high voter turnout.
The 15th National Voters’ day was observed across southern districts on Saturday.
Every year, National Voters Day is observed on January 25 to encourage all voters to exercise their voting right without fail. In view of this, a National Voters’ Day event was organised at S.T. Hindu college in Nagercoil in Kanniyakumari district.
Collector R. Alagumeena distributed voters’ identity cards to new applicants and college students.
Addressing the gathering, she told the students to exercise their franchise without fail and emphasised the importance of each vote and its impact on society. The district had recorded a voter turnout of 70-75% vote in the last election and the people must aim for 100% turnout in the upcoming election.
In Tirunelveli, Collector K.P. Karthikeyan administered a pledge to the Collectorate staff. Several programmes, including awareness campaigns, graffiti competitions for school and college students and rangoli competitions for women in self-help groups, were organised.
The Collector also felicitated the winners of the competition with certificates.
Newly assigned District Revenue Officer A. Ravichandran inaugurated the awareness campaign for National Voters’ Day. The DRO also administered the National Voters Day awareness pledge to the Collectorate and other department staff.
