NCSC Director meets SC youth attacked by Caste Hindus, calls for increased compensation for victim's family.
Director of National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) S. Ravivarman on Monday met Ayyasami, a Scheduled Caste (SC) youth whose hands were slashed by Caste Hindus for allegedly riding a motorcycle. [Police have claimed the attack took place following a drunken brawl.]
Mr. Ravivarman visited Mr. Ayyasami’s house at Melapidavoor, near Manamadurai, and met him at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai, where he has been undergoing treatment. During the inspection, he was apprised of the situation in the village by its residents and the district administration. Police officers of Sivaganga district briefed Mr. Ravivarman about the series of events that led to the attack. He also inquired the GRH doctors about Mr. Ayyasami’s condition.
As Mr. Ayyasami was seriously injured on his hands, it would take few months for him to return to normalcy, Mr. Ravivarman said. He added that considering the victim’s injuries, the government should explore options to increase the compensation amount.
“As only about ₹63,000 has been provided to the victim’s family, increasing the compensation amount will help them in managing the situation,” Mr. Ravivarman said.
