The Uttarakhand Cabinet on Wednesday (February 19, 2025) approved the Bhoo Kanoon (land law amendment bill). It will contain stringent provisions pertaining to the purchase and sale of agricultural/horticulture and residential land by non-residents in 11 hill districts.
The land law amendment bill is expected to be tabled in the ongoing Budget session, which is set to conclude on February 24.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that his government, being the guardian of the culture of the State, is committed to protecting citizens’ rights.
“Respecting the long-standing demands and sentiments of the people of the State, today the Cabinet has approved strict land laws. This historic step will protect the resources, cultural heritage, and rights of the citizens of the State, and will play a significant role in maintaining the original identity of the province,” Mr. Dhami said.
He added that the Bhoo Kanoon clearly shows that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is making every effort to save the state as undoubtedly, this law will also help in preserving the original form of the province.
Prior to this, anyone from the country was able to purchase around 12.5 acres of agricultural land across Uttarakhand, which can be increased in special cases. Separate permission was needed for the sale and purchase of land for industrial and other commercial purposes. For residential use, everyone was allowed to buy land in all areas of the State, and there was no cap on size.
