More than 160 pairs of buffaloes take part in Jaya Vijaya Kambla

Jaya Vijaya Kambala in Mangaluru features over 160 buffalo pairs racing through the night, honoring a family member.
More than 160 pairs of buffaloes took part in the Jaya Vijaya Jodu Kare Kambala in Jeppinamogaru in Mangaluru, which started on Saturday. The Kambala races went on throughout the night. The final races will be held between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. on Sunday, January 8.
The Jaya Vijaya Kambala is organised by Mankutotaguttu family in memory of their senior family member J. Jayagangadhara Shetty. This Kambala is the 10th Kambla of this year’s Kambala season, which started with Kodanya Siddakatte Kambala held on November 17, 2024.
The buffalo races of Jaya Vijaya Kambala in the slushy tracks in Jeppinamogaru started with races in ‘Negilu Hiriya’ category in which senior buffaloes took part. This was followed by races in ‘Negilu Kiriya’ category in which young buffaloes took part.
Among the buffaloes in action was the popular ‘Nandalage Moda’ buffalo of Nandalike Shrikant Bhat. Jockey Bombrana Bailu handled them. The other buffaloes in the race included ‘Boladaguttu Kamala’ and buffaloes of Krishapura Nadumane and of Parameshwar Saliyan. A total of 60 buffaloes took part in ‘Negolu Kiriya’ category, while 27 buffaloes took part in the ‘Negilu Hirya’ races.
A big cut out condoling death of popular buffalo ‘Nagu’ was placed prominently at the Kambala event.
Races in ‘Hagga Hiriya’, ‘Hagga Kiriya’ and in ‘Kene Halage’ and ‘Adda Halage’ categories started in the evening and went on through out the night.
Vijaya Kumar Kanginamane, a member of District Kambala Samiti and a judge in Jaya Vijaya Kambala, said races of Jaya Vijaya kambala will end within 24 hours. Best buffaloes and jockeys of the region are participating in this kambala.
