Modi, Shah must take responsibility for violence in Manipur: Kanimozhi
The Hindu
DMK member Kanimozhi Karunanidhi holds PM Modi and HM Shah accountable for Manipur violence, demands resignation.
Commenting on the resignation of Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, DMK member in Lok Sabha Kanimozhi Karunanidhi said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah must take responsibility for the communal violence that occurred in Manipur.
She said Mr. Singh resigned from the post of Chief Minister for his role in causing numerous human casualties. Mr. Singh was compelled to resign as recordings of his hate speeches directed towards minority communities have surfaced, she said, pointing out that the Opposition parties have been demanding his resignation. “The people of Manipur have been subjected to immense suffering, and the situation has not yet improved,” she said.
Ms. Kanimozhi said the communal violence in Manipur has resulted in more than 220 deaths, with more than 60,000 people displaced from the State. “People who had taken refuge in government’s relief camps were even abducted and killed. Besides, women were subjected to sexual harassment and violence. These atrocities were carried out with the support of the State government and its affiliates,” she alleged.
Ms. Kanimozhi said Manipur stands as a proof of the BJP’s fascist politics, which divides people and exploits their deaths for political gains. “Not only Biren Singh but also Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, who protected Biren Singh and failed to contain the violence in Manipur, must own responsibility for the worsened situation prevailing in that State,” she said.
