Widespread rainfall in Tiruchi and Cauvery delta brings relief from heat, beneficial for farming community.
Tiruchi and most parts of the Cauvery delta region received widespread rainfall on Tuesday, bringing relief from the rising mercury levels over the past couple of weeks.
Several parts of Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam districts received intermittent rain through the day. While Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai and Ariyalur districts witnessed light to moderate rainfall, some parts of Tiruvarur received heavy rainfall. Some of the districts recorded overnight rain too.
Tiruvarur recorded the maximum 78.5 mm of rainfall between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the day. Kodavasal (59 mm), Needamangalam (55.6), Muthupettai (44.4 mm), Nannilam (42.2) and Mannargudi (40 mm) also received sharp showers during the same period, according to rainfall figures furnished by the district administration.
Nagapattinam town received 36 mm of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Velankanni, Thirupoondi,Talaignayar and Vedaranyam witnessed moderate rain.
In Mayiladuthurai district, Manalmedu, Mayiladuthurai town, Sembanarkoil, Sirkazhi and Kollidam received moderate showers during the day.
Coming amid the onset of summer, the rain helped substantially bring down the day-time temperature in Tiruchi and other places, where the mercury was hovering between 37-39 degrees Celsius over the past few days in the region.
Sources in the Agriculture Department in Tiruchi said the rain would largely be beneficial for the farming community, especially those who were planning to take up summer paddy cultivation in well-irrigated and filter point areas. The light showers would also be helpful for pulses and oilseeds raised by farmers in the district.
