Minister inaugurates daily market in Kovilpatti and highlights urban development initiatives

Minister inaugurates new market and urban projects, highlighting Tamil Nadu's urban infrastructure development and welfare initiatives.
Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply K. N. Nehru inaugurated the new building of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar daily market in Kovilpatti on Saturday. The market was constructed under the Kalaignar Nagarpura Membattu Thittam at a cost of ₹6.87 crore.
At the event, he also inaugurated other completed projects through video conferencing under the Municipal Administration department across Thoothukudi, Kanniyakumari and Tenkasi districts.
Among the inaugurated projects were the newly constructed municipal office building in Tiruchendur at a cost of ₹3.5 crore and Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Bus Stand in Colachel at a cost of ₹5.55 crore. Additionally, he also inaugurated the Urban Primary Health Centre in Colachel built at a cost of ₹1.20 crore, a weekly market in Shencottai Municipality built for ₹ 2.76 crore and other projects such as libraries and grain storage houses in Kovilpatti region.
Speaking at the event, he emphasised the extensive efforts taken by the Tamil Nadu government to improve the urban infrastructure.
“About three to four decades ago neither the Union nor the State government provided funds as they do now. Earlier, panchayat unions were provided with only ₹3 to 4 lakh per year and town panchayats were allocated with ₹2 to 4 lakh annually. However, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has been providing ₹25,000 crore annually to the Municipal administration department to enhance the infrastructure of Municipalities,” he added.
The Minister further noted that 60% Tamil Nadu’s population resides in urban areas making it crucial to provide better infrastructure and essential service to the urban residents.
Additionally Mr. Nehru announced that ₹573 crore has been allocated for six municipalities and 17 town panchayats in Tenkasi district, ₹1,167 crore for the corporation, three municipalities and 18 town panchayats in Thoothukudi district, ₹1229.30 crore for one corporation, four municipalities and 51 town panchayats in Kanniyakumari district.

Flagging the issue that tenders for the supply of train sets/rolling stocks floated by the State government for the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) had failed thrice, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who was in the city on Saturday, said that Railways was now proposing to supply the train sets for BSRP.
