A state-of-the-art mini-indoor stadium built at a cost of ₹5.68 crore is ready for inauguration in Theni by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin soon, District Collector R.V. Shajeevana said here on Friday.
The district, with limited infrastructure facilities though, woke up to the need of sports activities after a youth hailing from here, U.S. Sujeeth, figured in the State basketball under-17 team and is shortly going to play at the national arena, Sports department officials said.
The mini-indoor stadium has been built in such a way that regional and State-level tournaments can be conducted. Within the stadium, lockers have been provided for the players’ use. Events can be held under floodlights.
In fact, a new skating rink has been established at ₹30 lakh that it stands to be a model in southern districts of Tamil Nadu. Earlier, many skaters used the public roads for practice and with the new facility in place, they have started using it, the officials said.
A hockey ground, cricket, and football grounds have been built in the master office complex after many young players aspiring to improve their skills appealed to the district administration seeking these facilities, she said and added that with the support of the Sports Development Authority Tamil Nadu, School Education Department, and the district administration, with Finance Commission Grant Funds, the new facilities were in place in a record time.
Very recently, land measuring about 2.5 acres in front of the office of the Department of Registration, which was encroached, was recovered. It would be used for cricket ground. “We will shortly fence the entire space,” Ms. Shajeevana said.
Theni District Sports officials said that they had been one of the host districts in Tamil Nadu, where the fourth Republic Day Sports events 2025 are under way for the Under-14 category. A total of 10,344 students are participating in football, kabaddi, volleyball, table tennis, handball, lawn tennis, badminton, throwball, kho-kho, basketball, and hockey, which would conclude on February 11.
