Stanley Reservoir in Mettur nears full capacity at 119.98 feet, expected to reach Full Reservoir Level soon.
The Stanley Reservoir in Mettur is inching closer to the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 120 feet, with the level at 119.98 feet on Tuesday evening.
If the dam touches the FRL, it will mark the third time this year that the reservoir has reached its full capacity. The dam had previously reached full capacity on July 30 and August 12.
An official from the Water Resources Department said that the dam was expected to reach its FRL by midnight. The official attributed this to the heavy rainfall in the catchment areas during the southwest monsoon, which resulted in substantial inflow into the reservoir in the past months. Additionally, the demand for water for irrigation in the delta districts was low this year due to abundant rainfall, resulting in reduced discharge from the dam. These factors helped maintain the water level above 100 feet for several months, he added.
Meanwhile, the inflow into the reservoir remains around 2,500 cusecs, with a discharge of 500 cusecs into the Cauvery and 300 cusecs into East and West canals.
Fishermen association members, who participated in the fishermen grievance redress meeting held at the District Collectorate in Nagercoil on Friday, sought issuance of subsidy for diesel and implementation of advanced technologies and establishment of control rooms on the shore for rescuing fishermen during emergencies at sea.
