Bengaluru-based jewellery designer Meghana Prakash's polymer clay creations include miniature book pendants and iconic character designs.
The next time you gift a book to a bibliophile, pair it with a miniature book pendant for an extra touch of joy. Bengaluru-based software professional-turned-jewellery designer Meghana Prakash (@clayarte) began creating these pendants to diversify her offerings beyond her signature floral designs. “Book lovers were overjoyed seeing the pendants,” Meghana shares, highlighting the charm they bring to her collection.
Meghana Prakash is a self-taught polymer clay jewellery designer who started crafting as a hobby, alongside quilling. What began as a weekend passion evolved into a full-time profession two years ago. Meghana was drawn to polymer clay for its pliability and versatility, which allowed her to experiment with diverse designs. “It’s a new medium, and learning resources are limited, so I discovered its potential through trial, error, and YouTube tutorials,” she explains. Her diploma in jewellery design Jd institute of fashion technology, Bangalore also helps refine her creative process and articulate her designs effectively.
When asked about the most challenging aspect of her work, Meghana reveals, “For me, it’s the design phase. Once that’s clear, everything flows smoothly. I work primarily with my fingers, as it helps me control pressure and shapes more precisely, using tools only when necessary.” Her hands-on approach highlights the artistry and meticulous effort behind her creations.
Polymer clay products are baked to enhance their durability, making them both drop-proof and slightly flexible. Meghana, who works from her home studio in Bengaluru, is a regular at events, including Comic Con, where her jewellery—particularly her floral earring collection—is sought after. Her product catalogue features earrings, hair clips, pendants, fridge magnets (custom orders), and lapel pins.
“Floral designs always draw attention,” Meghana shares. “While my work is delicate, it’s not micro art, which intrigues visitors and often turns them into buyers.” Her creations reflect a balance of intricacy and durability, making them both beautiful and practical.
Apart from signature floral designs, Meghana incorporates iconic video game and comic characters like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, and popular anime figures such as Goku, Zoro, Sanji, Gojo Satoru, Sasuke, Sukuna, and Luffy into her creations.
The vibrant colours in her products come directly from coloured clay, with no external paints used. However, for custom colour requests, Meghana explains, “We work with clay colour combinations to achieve the desired shade, which requires a solid understanding of colour profiles.” Her expertise in colour blending ensures that each piece is tailored to perfection.
According to government of Karnataka: “The fire broke out at the Galore Tx startup room in the second floor ESF07 lab due to improper management of solvent flammable solvent. All BBC startups were previously told to not store and use any large volume of inflammable chemicals in their lab, and a separate open storage area was provided for the same.”
