A 32-year-old lorry driver died after the vehicle he was driving plunged into a 30-ft-deep pit along the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway near Ambur town in Tirupattur on Saturday.
The deceased person has been identified as K. Perumal, a native of Arakkonam town.
The police said the driver, Perumal, was heading towards Tirupattur when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle. It plunged into a nearby pit.
The lorry had around 30 bags of cement that were being transported from Arakkonam to a retail dealer in Tirupattur.
In the impact, the lorry driver died on the spot. The accident occurred around 7.30 a.m.
Passers-by informed Ambur Town police, who went to the spot. Earthmovers were used to retrieve the vehicle from the pit.
