The government of Karnataka has decided to go ahead with the Bandora nala project. The special land acquisition officer, Malaprabha project III , Bagalkot, had issued a notification for land acquisition on February 25. The public notice was issued as per Section 11/1 of Karnataka Land Acquisition Act 2013.
Land acquisition is expected in Karambal village in Khanapur taluk for the rising main canal and storage facilities for the ‘Bandora Nala diversion lift irrigation scheme’. Objections , including identification of land, and denotification requests can be submitted in three months.
This follows a request by the government of Karnataka to increase the quantum of water allotted to it for various schemes.
While some farmers leaders have welcomed the proposal, those living in Khanapur taluk have opposed it.
The farmers, who are likely to lose land for the project, are unhappy. Some said they would not like to part with their land.
Rajaram Hanumant Ghadi of Karambal village , whose land has been identified for acquisition, said he will fight against it. “We would be thrown to the streets, as we would lose their only source of livelihood. My extended family’s fields are all here in this village. Where will we go? This is not like other projects. Dams and canals will be built here, and we will be displaced. We are farmers and don’t know any other skill. We asked officers to give us land in exchange for the land taken from us, but they are saying there is no guarantee of that. They said compensation amount will be released in phases. We are worried that it may be delayed, and we may never resettle properly,” Mr. Ghadi said.
Farmers’ leader Jyotiba Bendigeri of Bhooranaki village said the government’s move is short-sighted. “Why is the government bent on building a project that will not help the communities in anyway?”
