Tamil Nadu Minister's brother and 12 others appear in court for money-laundering case, involving cash-for-jobs scam
Tamil Nadu Minister V. Senthilbalaji’s brother R.V. Ashok Kumar and 12 others on Wednesday appeared before the Principal Sessions Court, which is hearing the Enforcement Directorate’s case of money-laundering against Mr. Senthilbalaji and others.
Mr. Senthilbalaji, the Minister for Electricity, Prohibition, and Excise, was arrested by the ED in an alleged money-laundering case on June 14, 2023. The ED filed a ‘prosecution complaint’ before the special court in Chennai against Mr. Senthilbalaji on August 12 for committing the offence of money-laundering in a cash-for-jobs scam in the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (Chennai) when he was the Transport Minister in the AIADMK government.
The ED initiated a money-laundering investigation on the basis of three FIRs registered by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) in the scam in which three charge sheets arraigning Mr. Senthilbalaji as the main accused were filed. The ED filed a supplementary prosecution complaint against Ashok Kumar and 12 others.
The probe revealed that Mr. Senthilbalaji, along with Ashok Kumar and his personal assistants B. Shanmugam and M. Karthikeyan, entered into a criminal conspiracy with the Managing Directors and other officials of the State Transport Undertakings and obtained illegal gratification from candidates for recruitment as drivers, conductors, junior tradesmen, junior assistants, junior engineers, and assistant engineers.
Taking the supplementary complaint on file, the Principal Sessions Court issued summonses to 13 persons, including Ashok Kumar, for their appearance on Wednesday. In compliance with the summonses, Ashok Kumar and the others appeared before Principal Sessions Judge S. Karthikeyan, who directed them to file sureties of ₹2 lakh each before April 20 and adjourned the case for further hearing to April 25.
