A 63-year-old lorry driver was arrested by Kannamangalam police on Wednesday for illegal mining of sand at Pudupalayam near Polur town in Tiruvannamalai.
Police said the arrested person was identified as P. Pachaiappan, a resident of Pudupalayam village that comes under Arani taluk.
Based on the alert, a special police team had been patrolling Kannamangalam Main Road when the team tried to stop Pachaiappan, who was driving the lorry loaded with sand.
Police intercepted the vehicle and found that the lorry was carrying sand. Initial inquiry revealed that he illegally mined sand from the dry portion of an irrigation tank and government land in the village to sell it to private contractors.
The police arrested the driver and seized the lorry with sand.
