
‘L2: Empuraan’ becomes first Malayalam film to release in IMAX

Malayalam cinema makes history with L2: Empuraan, the first film to release in IMAX format on March 27.
Malayalam cinema is set to achieve a major milestone as L2: Empuraan becomes the first film from the industry to release in IMAX format. The anticipated sequel to Lucifer (2019) is slated for a grand premiere on March 27, marking the next step in the technical evolution of Malayalam films.
Director Prithviraj Sukumaran had previously addressed fans’ queries about an IMAX release, stating that the film was not shot using full-format lenses and that he preferred to maintain an anamorphic 1:2.8 aspect ratio for the trilogy. However, he later hinted at the possibility of an IMAX release, saying, “Talk about destiny and divine intervention! Modern IMAX mastering technology is a thing of wonder! Let’s see..”
The filmmakers are optimistic that this move will pave the way for a long-term collaboration between IMAX and Malayalam cinema. They expressed their hope that L2: Empuraan‘s IMAX release would be the “beginning of a long and illustrious association.”
Returning to his role as Khureshi Ab’raam (Stephen Nedumpally), Mohanlal leads the cast alongside Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Indrajith Sukumaran, and international actors Jerome Flynn, Eriq Ebouaney, and Andrea Tivadar. Prithviraj Sukumaran reprises his role as Zayed Masood, described as the “Emperor’s General.”
Cinematographer Sujith Vaassudev and composer Deepak Dev also return for the sequel, with Akhilesh Mohan handling editing. The film is jointly produced by Aashirvad Cinemas and Lyca Productions.
