Veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has revealed that he has opted not to direct Krrish 4, the much-awaited fourth installment in his blockbuster superhero franchise, headlined by his son and Bollywood superstar Hrithik Roshan.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rakesh said that it was time for him to pass on the baton. “It’s better I do it when I am in my senses, so that I can overlook the process as well and ascertain whether he’s doing it correctly or not. Tomorrow, if I am not in my senses and I’ll have to pass it on, I will not know what they are making,” he said, adding that there is no guarantee that his involvement as a director would ensure a blockbuster run.
Meanwhile, reports have also claimed that director Siddharth Anand’s production banner Marflix has opted out of the project, reportedly due to challenges in pitching a high-budget superhero film “in the post-Marvel era.”
Bollywood Hungama’s story had cited the film’s enormous budget — reported as Rs 700 crore — for the studios’ hesitancy to commit, adding that it made it harder for Siddharth Anand’s Marflix to find a studio to produce the film with. “The studios were not confident about Krrish at this budget in the post-Marvel era as it has been more than a decade since the release of Krrish 3,” a source had told the portal.
However, in a latest development, a report by India Today cites a source who claimed the budget quoted by previous reports as inaccurate. “Hrithik and Rakesh Roshan had a closed-door meeting and have now decided to speak to studios all across India personally and lock a lucrative deal for the film. Krrish 4 will now be produced by FilmKraft with a leading studio, whereas Marflix will focus on other projects outside of Krrish,” said the report, adding that a new creative team will be entrusted with the responsibility of reassessing the budget of the film.
Krrish 4 has been in the talks for quite some time now. The film was first announced by Hrithik in 2021 on the 15th-year anniversary of the franchise.
Notably, the franchise was launched by Rakesh Roshan with the 2003 sci-fi feature Koi Mil Gaya, which starred Hrithik as a scientist opposite Preity Zinta.
