KRCL celebrates Republic Day with progress report, new trains, and infrastructure upgrades for Konkan Railway network.
Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL) celebrated the 76th Republic Day, that coincided with the first train running on its network 26 years ago, at its headquarters in Navi Mumbai.
After unfurling the tricolour, KRCL Chairman and Managing Director Santosh Kumar Jha inspected the Railway Protection Force (RPF) contingent. Speaking later, Mr. Jha shared the progress of the corporation during 2024 and said KRCL generated revenues of ₹1,793 crore from traffic and ₹2,361 crore from projects during the year.
Three new trains were introduced on its network, including extension of Train No. 12789/790 Kacheguda-Mangaluru Central-Kacheguda to Murdeshwar. He said a total of 19,957 passenger trains were operated over KR during 2024, reflecting an 8% increase compared to 18,465 trains in the previous year. The year also saw operation of 1,178 special coaching trains over KR.
Mr. Jha said KRCL opened world-class Executive Lounges at Madgaon, Thivim, Udupi, Chiplun and Khed. Ratnagiri and Mookambika Road Byndoor Stations would soon get this facility.
A rail arcade, featuring a modern food plaza with 14 stalls showcasing renowned food brands and regional delicacies, was inaugurated at Madgaon. Mr. Jha said 85% to 90% of trains on Konkan Railway operate on electric traction, leading to a substantial fuel cost savings of approximately ₹279.14 crore. KRCL has secured approval for 12 electrical works valued at ₹1,056 crore while its solar plants with combined capacity of 660 kW generated 4.24 lakh units of electricity saving ₹55.13 lakh on energy bills.
He said from January to December, weld failures decreased by 21%, a significant improvement attributed to the completion of 57 km of Complete Track Renewal (CTR) and 15 km of Through Weld Renewal (TWR).
