Keel-laying of Indian Navy's seventh ASW SWC vessel at CSL with advanced SONARS for underwater surveillance.
The keel-laying of the seventh anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft (ASW SWC), which is being built for the Indian Navy, was undertaken at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) on Wednesday in the presence of Rear Admiral Upal Kundu, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command.
The vessel is capable of a maximum speed of 25 knots, has endurance of 1,800 nautical miles, and is fitted with indigenously developed, state-of-the-art SONARS for underwater surveillance, said an official release.
Madhu S. Nair, chairman and managing director, CSL, and senior officials of the shipyard and the Navy were present.
The contract for building eight ASW SWC ships was signed between the Ministry of Defence and CSL on April 30, 2019. The Mahe class of ships will replace the in-service Abhay class ASW corvettes of the Indian Navy. They are designed to undertake anti-submarine operations in coastal waters, low-intensity maritime operations, and mine-laying operations including subsurface surveillance, the release said.
