The Puducherry government is exploring options to establish an IT park and a textile-related industry on the premises of the now-defunct Anglo French Textiles in the town, Home Minister A. Namassivayam said in the Assembly on Thursday (March 20, 2025).
Replying to a question raised by nominated legislator belonging to BJP A.B. Ashok Babu, the Minister said the government wanted to set up an IT park at the earliest on the premises of the defunct mill. However, the Lt. Governor wanted the government to explore the possibility of setting up a textile industrial unit as the territory has a long history of functioning textile mills, Mr. Namassivayam, who also handles the Industry portfolio, said.
Based on the interest shown by the Lt. Governor in reviving the textile industry, the government had approached the South India Textile Research Association to conduct a study. SITRA was in the process of submitting a report on the feasibility of reviving the mills, he said.
“There is enough land in the AFT area for setting up an apparel manufacturing unit and also an IT park. Some area has already been set aside for PM-Ekta Mall project. We will soon lay the foundation for setting up the IT park, the Minister said.
