All eligible women will get Gruhalakshmi payments in a few days, Minister of Women and Child Development, and Disabled and Senior Citizens Empowerment Laxmi Hebbalkar said in Belagavi on Friday. “There have been some delays in depositing the monthly amounts into the beneficiaries’ accounts. These are procedural delays and not anything else. The amount will be deposited soon,” she said.
She said that the State government released the money to the taluk panchayats which in turn transferred it to the Department of Women and Child Welfare. We will follow the same procedure, but make it quicker, she told reporters at her home.
The Minister who is recuperating from a spinal injury she suffered in a road accident, said she would return to active duty in two weeks. “I have been working from home all these days. I will be back in the field in around two weeks,” she said. She said that she had instructed police and revenue officials to take strong steps to stop alleged harassment of poor rural women by micro finance agency officers and agents.
“I received complaints 6-9 months ago. I held a meeting of microfinance officers, police and revenue officers. In the meantime, five or six leaders from outside the constituency were soliciting for finance companies. About 20,000 women had taken loans from such companies. We are working towards ensuring that they do not face harassment. We will continue to protect vulnerable families,” she said.
Ms. Hebbalkar said, “I have been involved in social service and public life for the last 25 years. My daily routine is spending time among the people. I am still in touch with people through telephone and video conferencing.’‘ She said she had actively participated in all meetings related to budgeting of her department, including a meeting with the Chief Minister.
Ms. Hebbalkar’s fans and followers celebrated her birthday at her residence in a simple manner on Friday.
