Members of Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA) launched a 24-hour demonstration at the Dindigul Collectorate on Monday, pressing a charter of demands.
Led by district president of the association S. Mubarak Ali and secretary M. Sugandi, the TNGEA members demanded that vacancies in various government posts should be filled and the old pension scheme restored. They said the DMK, in its last Assembly election manifesto, had promised that the new pension scheme would be scrapped and the old pension scheme implemented. However, the DMK government had failed to honour this promise, they said.
The protesting association members said there was a huge workload on the government employees and they had to work beyond their working hours. Therefore, necessary steps should be taken to fill vacancies existing in various posts. The government should appoint new employees and not outsource work.
Also, review meetings should not be held after work hours and during holidays. It should be held only during the work hours, they said.
The members also demanded that dearness allowance arrears, regularisation of services, pension and regular pay scale should be given to anganwadi workers, nutritious meal scheme workers, village assistants, village librarians and other workers. There was an irregular pay system and this should be rectified, they urged.
The association members complained that appointments made under compassionate grounds had been reduced from 25% to 5%. This should be restored to the original level, they said.
They also said the breakfast scheme should be implemented through the midday meal scheme workers. The Medical Insurance Scheme for government employees should be undertaken by the government, and cashless treatment should be ensured at all hospitals, they said.
