Goonda Act invoked against murder accused

Mangaluru police detain murder accused under Goonda Act for multiple serious criminal cases to maintain public order.
The Mangaluru police have put a 27-year-old murder accused in preventive detention by invoking provisions of Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders, Slum Grabbers, and Video or Audio Pirates Act, 1985 (Goonda Act).
In a statement, the police said an order was passed on January 31 against Bharat Shetty of Idya village in Surathkal under Section 3 of the Goonda Act.
The police said Shetty was accused in 13 serious criminal cases registered in Mangaluru Police Commissionerate and Dakshina Kannada district police limits. It included a murder case, four attempt to murder cases, and a case each of dacoity, unlawful assembly, and assault. He is also accused cases of offences against women.
Despite legal action, Shetty has continued his criminal activity, posing serious threat to public order. To prevent further criminal activity and maintain law and order, preventive detention order has been issued against Shetty, the police said.
