Google has started rolling out the first public beta version Android 16. The release is available just for the new Google Pixel models while the public release expected to land in the second-quarter of the year.
The beta will include features like Live Updates that helps users “monitor and quickly access important ongoing activities” and are updated in real time. Different apps will be able to display custom icons for the progress taking place.
There’s also a dynamic lockscreen notifications feature which forces apps to add support for resizable windows, to make sure they can run full-screen on tablets and foldable gadgets. While games aren’t included in this yet, during the Android 17 release in 2026, they will also need to support the same.
Android 16 will also have support for camera functionality on compatible smartphones with support for Advanced Professional Video (APV) codec that enables up to 8K video recording, multi-view video, HDR 10 and HDR 10+ support, and night mode. They will also have scene detection in low-light conditions.
Besides, there are also improvements made to the photo picker menu, haptic controls and a Health Connect app for sharing medical data.
