Four persons, including two pilgrims hailing from Kolar district in Karnataka, were killed when a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus collided with two lorries on the Old Madras-Bangalore Road near SIPCOT in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, in the early hours on Thursday (January 9, 2025).
The police said the deceased have been identified as N. Somasekar, 30, and V. Krishnappa, 65, — both pilgrims from Kolar — and V. Manjunath, 32, and S. Shankara, 32, the driver and cleaner, respectively, of one of the lorries that was carrying a vegetable consignment from Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh.
According to the police, S. Narayanaswamy, 38, a resident in Kolar, had organised a pilgrimage for 120 persons from Singhahalli village to the Melmaruvathur Adi Parasakthi temple near Chennai. Tickets were booked on four KSRTC buses for the same.
The pilgrims were returning from Melmaruvathur when the driver of one of KSRTC buses reportedly tried to overtake a lorry to catch up with other three buses and collided with another lorry carrying vegetables, coming from the opposite direction. The lorry behind the bus also collided with it.
The patrol police and other motorists shifted the injured persons to the Government Taluk Hospital in Walajah town. Ranipet SIPCOT police roped in cranes to remove the mangled vehicles from the road. The four bodies were sent to a government hospital for postmortem examination.
Ranipet Collector J. U. Chandra Kala and Superintendent of Police Vivekananda Shukla inspected the spot and met the injured persons. A case has been registered by the Ranipet SIPCOT police and further investigation is underway.
