Fishermen rescue Dugong that got entangled in net

A nearly seven-foot-long Dugong, a marine mammal commonly known as “sea cow”, which got entangled in the fishing net, was rescued and safely released into the sea by a group of fishermen of Kollukadu coastal village in Pattukottai forest range in neighbouring Thanjavur district in the early hours on Sunday
A nearly seven-foot-long Dugong, a marine mammal commonly known as “sea cow”, which got entangled in the fishing net, was rescued and safely released into the sea by a group of fishermen of Kollukadu coastal village in Pattukottai forest range in neighbouring Thanjavur district in the early hours on Sunday.
A Forest department official said a group of fishermen of Kollukadu were fishing in the sea when the Dugong got accidentally entangled in their net. The fishermen informed the Forest department officials and the Dugong was rescued and safely released into the sea.
An official said the Forest department had been conducting awareness programmes in the coastal villages in Thanjavur district on Dugongs and the importance of their conservation. Dugongs are included in Schedule I of The Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972 which provides it the highest degree of protection under the Act.
