Fire damages 35-40 shops in Dewan Devdi market, Hyderabad; 50 firefighters control flames in Madina and Abbas Towers.
Around 35-40 shops on the third and fourth floors of Madina and Abbas Towers in the busy Dewan Devdi market were damaged in a fire that broke out in the early hours of Monday.
T. Venkanna, the District Fire Officer (DFO) of Hyderabad said that it took about 50 firefighters and eight fire tenders to control the blazing flames. “Fire was reported at 2.15 a.m. on the second floor of the G+3 building, which has two cellars. Most of the shops had textiles and clothes,” said the officer.
The building’s watchman and his family of four were rescued in time from the third floor. The fire was confined to the second and third floors by the fire fighters. “The building adjacent to the towers was evacuated and about 15 people were brought to safety as a precautionary measure,” added the DFO.
Officers from the ground shared that the narrow lanes around the building made it difficult for firefighters to tackle the problem. “We could only operate and perform our duties from the front side of the building,” said an officer.
The Telangana Fire and Rescue Department attended a total of 7,383 fire-related calls in 2024. Of these, 7,093 were classified as small incidents, 180 as medium, 87 as serious, and 24 as major fires.
