The Chittoor district administration, in association with the Rural Organisation for Poverty Eradication Services (ROPES), organised the International Women’s Day celebrations, at Nagayya Kalakshetram here on Saturday. District Collector Sumit Kumar launched the celebrations with a slogan that every day should be celebrated as women’s day, to make women empowerment a reality.
Sumit Kumar said that women played a vital role in societal development. He felt that men should treat women with respect and support their empowerment. “This will herald a beautiful atmosphere at the workstations in particular,” he said, adding that women could foster a community of strength and solidarity.
Puthalapattu MLA K. Muralimohan said that the the whole world depended on women for progress. He stated that women were known for their courage throughout history and had not only fought battles, but also engineered the world’s development.
ROPES director P. Sree Latha sought the women to move forward with determination. She felt that women had the mettle to prove their problem-solving skills and multi-faceted talents. She said that the women at the grassroot-level should utilise all the welfare schemes introduced by the Central and State governments, as they would promote their education, employment, and safety.
On this occasion, the Collector felicitated women employees of government departments and women from voluntary organisations, in recognition of their contributions to women empowerment.
The District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) officials said that ₹97.72 crore were funded to 576 women’s self-help groups (SHGs), while Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas’ (MEPMA) contribution stood at ₹28.93 crore to 3,740 urban SHG members.
